[PAX East 2011] – Interview with Wizards of the Coast

Once again, I returned to the Wizards of the Coast booth this year at PAX East.  I know the table-top gaming world out there is interested to know what the elite teams at Wizards have in the works for the rest of 2011 and 2012.  Last year, I interviewed a PR and Marketing director for the company, as well as checking out the fantastic Surfacescapes demo with the team from Carnegie Mellon.

First, I talked with Paul from Wizards who talked to us all about Magic: The Gathering Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012 and the Magic CORE Set 2012.  You can check out the official press release and teaser trailer for Duels in my earlier post here.  Paul discussed one interesting update to DotP known as “Archenemy Mode.”  In this mode, you and a few of your friends actually co-op against a common villain who, of course, starts with double the life than your normal human or AI opponent.  Together, you must defeat the archenemey in glorious co-operative combat.  Unfortunately, the mic cut out right before the interview with Paul; our deepest apologies.  We’ll be in touch, however.

Next, Rachel and I ventured over to the Dungeons & Dragons section of Wizards table-top corner in the main expo hall.  There we met with Kierin Chase, Brand Manager for D&D in the company’s private press room.  Amongst a cozy sea of books and background D&D logo and castle wall, Kieren laid out much about D&D’s immediate present and future.  The team is greatly excited about the Wednesday night Encounters as well as maintaining and updating the new online Tools that dropped in the fall.  The D&D Essentials books are continuing to develop, and the Races compendiums are officially squelched.  Chase informed us that they just weren’t meeting the customers’ needs.  We both bowed our heads at the death of the Miniatures; however, Chase informed us that Wizards of the Coast is still going to ensure the minis are available for the fans, just not in the traditional booster packs.  They will still be made available in the board games (like Castle Ravenloft) and other venues.  Read on to see the full interview with Kieren and the future of D&D.
